Our Burns Supper
Last Thursday the club held it’s traditional Burns Supper. We didn’t manage to pull-off a repeat of last year’s amazing black-tie dinner in the Playfair Library. But we did celebrate in style – outside, with the burners on in Bristo Square! I’ve put a few photos in the gallery.
Hope everyone had great holidays – the balloon club is back in full swing and is getting ever closer to purchasing an Edinburgh Uni branded balloon!
Hope to see ya at the next meeting,
David

Ceilidh Dancin’
This year’s Highflyer’s Ceilidh – hosted jointly by the Hot Air Balloon, Skydiving and Gliding clubs – took place in Teviot on Wednesday 15th November. It proved once again to be a fantastic night for all and even raised a few pounds for the club.
David Reitter from the Gliding club has put online some one hundred pictures taken at the ceilidh.

Tranquil Flight
Despite poor weather hampering the club’s ability to fly in the first few weeks of the academic year, the club has recently notched up an impressive 5 flights in 8 days. Sunday 15th Oct saw 2 flights taking place in the Scottish Borders. Wednesday 18th Oct saw a return to the Scottish Borders and a rather delayed return home, as the Land Rover broke down and we had to await the arrival of the RAC.
On Saturday 21st Oct we flew from Auchterarder in Perthshire and managed to reach a height of one mile. Although the club is unaware of anyone joining the mile high club, we cannot discount the possibility that a member may have gained a solo membership by discreetly using the hand in the pocket technique.
Finally on Sunday 22nd Oct the club took part in the Scottish Universities Balloon Challenge. The event was based at Balado, near Kinross (home of T in the Park) and despite attracting strong entries, we managed to drive away with all 3 awards – Hare and Hounds, furthest travelled and fastest retrieve.
Since the competition was resurrected 3 years ago, the club has managed to win all 3 awards each year. We are currently working towards purchasing a new balloon. If you are interested in joining the club or finding out more about us, please get in contact with Ben Miller at s0562245@sms.ed.ac.uk

The club is currently seeking funding for a new balloon, hopefully sporting the university colours and logo. The image below is a possible design, courtesty of Lindstrand Balloons.
